History Inside-Out: Learning How to Decenter the Dominant Narrative
Dominant narratives seem hard-wired into the collective memory, into our textbooks, and in our lessons. They’re incomplete and they represent only one point of view – that of people in power. Some – like Columbus “discovering” a new world – are easy to spot; others are more subtle – So how can teachers break free? Challenging those narratives isn’t just a matter of knowing history: it’s also a matter of mastering a set of skills and asking the right questions. In this webinar, Professor Hasan Kwame Jeffries and CARE Executive Director Maureen Costello will share and demonstrate techniques that will help you turn dominant narratives inside-out. Participants will have tools and techniques they can use right away to make history more inclusive and more accurate.
